PIECING THE CUSHION TOP
8 Follow steps 5–12 of the quilt instructions to piece the Cushion Block templates. Make five blocks using Fabrics A and B, and four using Fabrics C and D.
Arrange the blocks in three rows of 9 three, referring to the photography for placement. Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the rows together.
ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION
10 Make a quilt sandwich using the pieced cushion front, batting square and the lining square. Quilt as desired. Trim off any excess batting and backing, squaring up to measure 18½in.
11 Using the 19in x 14in backing piece, lining and batting, make a quilt sandwich and quilt as desired. Repeat with the other backing piece. Trim each backing piece to 18½in x 12½in.
12 Press a binding strip in half, wrong sides together. Align the raw edges of the pressed strip with one long edge of a backing piece. Sew, then press the strip away from the backing and fold to the lining side. Pin or clip in place, then topstitch from the front. Trim the edges even with the sides of the backing. Repeat with the second backing piece.
13 Place the cushion top right side up. Place the backing pieces on top, both right sides down. Align the raw edges, with the bound edges overlapping in the centre. Pin in place, then sew around the outer edge, backstitching where the backing pieces overlap. Press well. Clip corners and turn right side out to finish.
