ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION TOP
Follow steps 4– 6 of the quilt instructions 6
to make eight HST units. Make four large corner and four small corner QST units following steps 7–9.
Use all of the pieced units to make one 7
Block B, following step 11 of the quilt instructions. Press the block well. Make a quilt sandwich, layering one 25in square of lining fabric, the batting square and the quilt block. Baste all the layers in place.
Quilt the cushion top as desired. Trim
8
the cushion top to 20½in square, cutting away excess batting and lining fabric.
FINISHING THE CUSHION
Make a quilt sandwich by layering
9
each 14½in x 20½in backing piece with a batting and lining rectangle. Quilt as desired, then trim each backing piece to measure 14½in x 20½in.
Take one trim piece and press in half 10
lengthwise, WST. Take one backing piece, and with the lining side up, align the raw edges of the trim with one long edge. Sew in place. Press and fold to the front, and topstitch in place, backstitching at the beginning and end.
Repeat step 10 with the second backing 11
and trim piece. Carefully cut away any excess trim at each side of the backing pieces to neaten up the edges.
With the cushion top right side up, 12
place the backing pieces on top, both right side down. Align the raw edges around the outside of the cushion, with the trimmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin or clip in place.
Sew all the way around the outer
13
edge with a ¼ in seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Then use a zig zag stitch, or an overlocker machine, to cover the raw edges to prevent them from fraying.
To finish, carefully clip the corners
14
without cutting into the seam. Turn the cushion right side out, poking out the corners to create a crisp and flat finish. Trim all the loose threads and insert a cushion pad to finish.
