PIECING THE PLACEMAT

Take the 20in x 16in rectangle. Cut

3

a horizontal line through the centre. Cut 3in either side twice to create six strips (Fig 1). Sew yellow strips between the white strips, taking care to keep them in the same order (Fig 2). Press the seam allowance towards the yellow fabric.

Repeat the process in step 3 to cut

4

the panel vertically (Fig 3). Sew the remaining yellow strips between the pieces, taking care to sew the strips back together in the same order, and carefully aligning the edges.

CONSTRUCTING THE PLACEMAT

Press the placemat top well. Make 5

a quilt sandwich by placing the top centrally and right side up on top of the batting. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

Quilt as desired. Kate followed the lines 6

of the check. Trim to 18½in x 14½in.

Lay the backing fabric on top, RST, and 7

sew around the outer edge. Leave a 6in turning gap along one edge. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Slip stitch the turning gap closed and press.

Add ric rac around the outer edge 8

of the placemat to finish.
