HOWTO | Edit ima ges in Preview

-

1

Quickest crop ever

Double-click an image and Preview opens and displays it. Use the rectangle marquee tool to quickly drag a rectangle shape (your crop area). Adjust by dragging the sides. Hit ç+K and the image is cropped to the area you selected. To undo, hit ç+Z.

2

Save, use, forge on

With the crop in effect you can save the image with ç+S. This overwrites the original picture. If you want to go back to the original, uncropped image, you can do so using Versions. Select File > Revert to and then click Browse All Versions.

3

Check your size

Before resizing an image, check how big your original is. Preview displays the full image by default; get the bigger picture using View > Actual Size, or press the ç+0 (zero) shortcut. This instantly shows you just how big or small the image is.

4

Adjust it

To change the size of the image, use Tools > Adjust Size. A drop-down menu appears that lets you change the size in a number of different ways. By having an idea of the true size, you’ll know what is required for the resizing job at hand.

5

Pick a value

Choose how you want to specify the resize. The simplest option is the percentage value, but the others all have specific merits. Pixels can be used to create perfect images for web posts, millimetres for page layouts and centimetres for printing.

6

Pick a percentage

Here we’ve reduced the dimensions by 50%. The default resolution in most cases is 72 pixels per inch, which is fine for viewing on a (non-Retina) screen or the web, but not for printing (go for double that or more), let alone professional publishing (300ppi is optimum).

7

Time for an edit

You can quickly edit an image with Tools > Adjust Colour, or å+ç+c. The tool window that opens is also used in Apple’s iMovie application, and is similar to the advanced controls in iPhoto. These tools let you make quite precise adjustments to your image.

8

Stunning sliders

Use the sliders to adjust overall exposure and contrast, or tweak bright or dark tones separately. Use the Saturation slider to boost or subdue the colour; use the Sepia slider to create a antique effect. You can send, share or upload straight from Preview.
