A Genius idea

-

A while back I wrote to give my views on Mavericks and to mention the bad customer service I had in an Apple store. Well, after a hectic week, the Apple store has now been amazing. I went back and ended up seeing someone at the Genius Bar (all I know him as is John P). He spent some time working with me and did a clean install, which didn't get rid of all of the problems I was having, but has made much of the day-to-day running of the Mac faster. I still have problems with Mail running slowly, and after looking on forums, I realised I'm not alone, so I switched to Thunderbird, which may not look as good but works like a dream. Something someone mentioned on a forum was how much faster his Mac went when Mail was no longer used.

I still have problems with previously opened apps (usually Safari, Word or iTunes) reopening when I log back into Mavericks, even though the tick is removed from ‘reopen windows’. I am now getting in the habit of checking all software is quit when I shut down.

Boot up is also still taking a while, and I also still see a delay when opening windows before folders appear. However, I’ve yet to try a tip I was told about on a forum. I was told if shared drives etc appear down the side of a finder window, this can cause a slow response in folders showing.

I am thinking about switching back to Snow Leopard, but for now, I will give Mavericks a little longer and hope for updates to fix these issues.

Also, to further restore my faith in Apple and staff at the Apple store, after my trip to the Genius Bar I packed up my Mac but accidentally left my keyboard and mouse behind. I phoned them the next morning, and when I went in to pick them up I was given a new keyboard and mouse for free! The service from the Genius Bar, on this occasion, by far made up for the rather patronising man I first spoke to after getting my new Mac.

Thank you for your time, as well as a great magazine, and I would to say to anyone having trouble to visit the Genius Bar in the Apple store. They're a brilliant idea! Also make use of online forums, I have found them very useful these past few days. Rob Orton Paul Blachford says: We’re delighted to hear that you had such a positive experience, Rob. And we agree – we hear time and time again that it’s the service that Apple customers receive in its retail stores that really confirm people as Apple fans. Enjoy your Mac – with its brand new keyboard and mouse! And don’t forget to let us know how you get on with Mavericks.
