“Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said

Apple and Google have agreed to end outstanding litigation concerning Motorola Mobility; but attempts to reach a deal with Samsung did not succeed.

“Apple and Google have agreed to dismiss all the current lawsuits that exist directly between the two companies,” the two firms said in May.

Both companies also said they would work together “in some areas” of patent reform – in this case they want to change the system so ‘patent trolls’ can be stopped in their tracks. Some small firms make their money filing patent infringement litigation, guessing the cost of these cases will drive those they sue to reach settlement. Crucially, neither Google nor Apple have agreed to cross-license patents, leaving the door open to future litigation over technologies used by Android and iOS.

Meanwhile, a court-ordered mediation attempt between Samsung and Apple failed when the Korean firm's legal team accused Apple of being a “jihadist”, citing Steve Jobs’ famed commitment to “destroy” Android. A second May report in a Korean newspaper claiming the two firms agreed to settle their disputes out of court proved to be inaccurate.
