Is Apple working on VR iGlasses?

- Edited by graham barlow

With macOS High Sierra adding support for external GPUs and virtual reality headsets, like Valve’s SteamVR and the HTC Vive VR headset, many are speculating that Apple is in the process of developing its own virtual realty headset.

Virtual reality creates a whole world to occupy, in contrast to augmented reality which overlays information on top of the world around us. It’s rumoured that Apple has a team of developers working on the project in secret. The fact that Apple has been hiring more virtual reality engineers and keeps acquiring AR/VR companies is fuelling speculation further.

Another popular rumour is that Apple is developing a set of AR glasses that augment the iPhone in a similar way to the Apple Watch, giving you notifications and, again, overlaying information on top of the world around you.

Jo says… Both VR and AR mess with my head. I still can’t get over the AR demo of The Machines at the Apple Event!

Creating a pair of VR glasses that have long enough battery life is perhaps the main technical hurdle to overcome.

The ‘iGlasses’ could include a camera in the design, but there are privacy issues to contend with.

3 CarPlay

It’s possible that Apple will incorporate augmented reality glasses into its CarPlay heads-up display.
