Roxio Toast 17

Recording app still burning bright

£89.99 (Titanium); £139.99 (Pro) FROM Corel Corporation, roxio.com Needs OS X 10.10 or later

Burning optical discs may seem out of vogue, but Roxio is still making upgrades to its software.

Toast 17 can still author and burn CDs and DVDs (and Blu-rays with the £139.99 Pro edition); aside from the darker interface and a new internet-based installer, the app is largely the same. It is now 64-bit, though, making it feel faster, and resolving persistent lag when switching to the Video tab from Data, Audio, Copy, or Convert modes.

Toast is still not a proper successor to the late DVD Studio Pro in terms of pro authoring, although the bundled MyDVD allows for custom chapter stops and menus. MultiCam Capture makes it possible to create tutorials or training videos using FaceTime cameras, Mac displays and supported audio/video hardware.

The app now includes editing and titling capabilities for up to two streams; multitrack picture-in-picture and four streams are reserved for the Pro edition. You can’t record multiple sources at once then assemble a finished video, but for editing live or adding extra content after the fact, Toast is more than capable.
