AN UPGRADE DILEMMA

-

My 2011 iMac can’t run Mojave. The upgrade choices for me are a new iMac or a Mac mini (2018 version) with the LG UltraFine 5K monitor. The prices of both are similar, but the LG monitor was listed for delivery on 15 December, and then put back to 2 January. Why is there such a long lead time?

The Mac mini is my preferred route, currently due to extra cores and ports available, but I’m holding off because of the monitor delay. Any info gratefully received.

Why can’t Apple upgrade the graphics processor in this iMac so the new macOS will run? That component was replaced once, free of charge, due to a fault. by STEVEN TURNER

Alan says … My home iMac is from the same year, so I feel your pain. I’ve had to start using my 2012 mini, usually my server, as my desktop Mac. At the time of writing, the LG display was back to a two-day delivery, so I expect stock simply ran low. Apple said a while ago that it’ll put out a new display – see our 2019 look-ahead on page 60. Regarding graphics processors, Apple doesn’t treat those as upgradeable – as with storage and Intel Core processors, it’ll only replace that part with like for like. This is one reason external GPUs look like a promising way to extend a Mac’s life, much like internal card upgrades were on older Mac Pros.
