How can I get a fixed external IP address?

Unlike domain names, these are normally controlled by internet service providers (ISPs), each with an allocated block. Contact your ISP: most charge extra for a fixed IP address, and they’re not available on all service plans.

Can I still use an iMac with a dead Ethernet port?

Yes. The port would be costly to repair, usually requiring a new logic board. You could add a Thunderbolt or USB adapter. The snag is that some products use the port’s MAC address to identify the Mac, so may require reauthorisation.
