Build quality

The Seagate is made of glossy black plastic (there is a Mac-formatted white one available, too), though it feels quite bump-resistant. The corners and edges are rounded, which feel friendlier than the sharp points on the WD.

Speed

To test the speed, we copied a folder containing 50,000 files totalling 13.2GB from our Mac’s SSD to the Seagate Backup Plus. The drive took almost 50% longer than the WD My Book, clocking in at 4 minutes 42 seconds.

Software

There are a couple of software tools available to download. One allows you to read and write to the NTFS-formatted drive on a Mac (though you will need to reformat it to use it with Time Machine). The other syncs files in a ‘Mirror’ folder to the Seagate drive.

Features

The Seagate sports a USB 3 port on its rear. It has two front-facing USB slots for charging an iOS device, or to plug in a USB stick to mount it on your Mac. It doesn’t have a Kensington Security Lock slot.
