Build quality

The My Book’s glossy black plastic case looks chic but doesn’t feel robust. For a desktop drive this may not be too much of a problem. However, the sharp corners put us off the drive’s overall look.

Speed

Copying the same 13.2GB folder with 50,000 files in from our Mac’s SSD to the WD My Book (using the same USB port on our Mac and the same cable) took a very impressive 3 minutes 15 seconds.

Software

The WD drive comes with two software tools: WD Security, which lets you encrypt files you store on it, and WD Drive Utilities, which allows you to run diagnostic tests on the disk. There’s no backup software included as an alternative to Time Machine.

Features

Other than the included software, the My Book is short on additional features. It does have a Kensington Security Lock slot, though. Aside from that, there’s only a USB 3.0 port for the included USB cable.
