Yoink 3.5.4

Easily drag and drop in full-screen apps

-

If you use apps in full-screen mode, Yoink’s benefits are obvious

When we reviewed Yoink for iOS (MF #335), we explained how it made moving multiple files between apps on an iPhone easier. The updated Mac version extends that to add more features to ease the copying of files from iOS to Mac.

Sadly, that’s yet to include the syncing of files in Yoink between macOS and iOS via iCloud (although it does work between iOS devices), a feature that’s been in development for several months. But it does mean you can now use Continuity Camera on a Mac running Mojave to take photos or scan documents on an iPhone, and add them to Yoink on your Mac.

Other new features include making it easier to change the position of Yoink’s shelf on your screen; the ability to use Save As to rename a file when you copy it to Yoink; and a modifier key to keep a copy of a file in Yoink

when you drag it out, or to disable Yoink when you drag a file in the Finder. You can also double-click a modifier to add the entire contents of the clipboard to Yoink.

Clipboard and Continuity

If you’re a Mac user with a large display and don’t use full-screen apps, Yoink may seem unnecessary. However, for anyone who uses apps in full-screen mode, its benefits are obvious. The Today widget is particularly useful. It houses anything you copy to the Clipboard, from a snippet of text to a URL to a file. You can then open the Today widget from the Finder menu bar and either add an item to the Yoink shelf or copy it back to the Clipboard.

The support for Continuity Camera is also excellent, allowing you to import photos taken or documents scanned with your iPhone or iPad camera. Yoink also has a number of customisation options covering how and when the shelf slides out, where it’s positioned, how many items it displays, and more. You can add an extension for Yoink to Alfred if you use it, or use macOS’s Print to PDF to add PDFs to Yoink. And there’s a Finder Quick Action extension that allows you to add items to Yoink from a Finder window.

If you find yourself frustrated moving files or snippets of content around your Mac, Yoink is a terrific solution. KENNY HEMPHILL
