the first thing you notice about this video-editing app’s latest version is the streamlined and redesigned interface. It’s much more reminiscent of Final Cut Pro or Premiere. The iconography is well implemented, meaning tools are easy to identify and use, and it’s particularly good on the new iPad Pro. On the iPhone, the interface adapts to prioritise video preview. On both devices, landscape and portrait modes are supported, and you can configure the window layout to suit you.
There’s no direct support for accessing your device’s camera from inside the app, but it can import from your Camera Roll, as well as a host of cloud services. Video, audio, graphic, and photo media can be dragged and dropped from your libraries directly into a project; and if it’s coming from the cloud, it downloads in the background.
You now get six video tracks (up from three), and six dedicated audio tracks for a total of 12, since the video tracks also contain their own audio capabilities. New track headers can be shown which allow quick control of locking, hiding, and muting tracks. Media can be easily dragged around and cut, with an impressive library of transitions and effects that include green-screen keying and advanced titling.
Pro projects
The timeline is easy to navigate and it’s now possible to output your program stream to an external screen. There are markers too, so you can add annotations about edits and decisions, and frame integration which allows things like drawing on clips and adding notes for collaborators to look at.
Performance was excellent on an iPad Pro 11-inch, and project management is also a breeze, with multiple export destinations available. There’s even XML export for Final Cut, with Premiere also coming in an update, so you can transfer raw projects to a desktop system. This is an excellent update that’s free for owners of version 1, and great value for new purchasers. It will be interesting to see how the mouse support in the upcoming iPadOS is embraced by the developers. In the meantime, it’s far and away the most powerful iOS video editing suite around, with pro features galore and superb performance. Hollin Jones
