iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, and more!

Triple-camera system and improved battery life!

- EDITED BY ROB MEAD-GREEN

Apple unveiled an incredible line-up of new hardware and services at its ‘By innovation only’ event in September, with the flagship iPhone 11 Pro stealing the show.

Described by Apple as the “most powerful and advanced smartphone” it has ever made, the iPhone 11 Pro is equipped with a new triple-camera system that combines Wide, Ultra Wide and Telephoto lenses for even better mobile capture capabilities, a stunning Super Retina XDR display (5.8in and 6.5in). Plus, a new A13 Bionic chip, which is not only 20% faster than the A12 Bionic found in the iPhone XR and iPhone XS, but also delivers up to five hours more battery life.

The triple-camera system promises to make the world’s most popular camera even more so, thanks to the way it enables you to seamlessly switch between Wide, Ultra Wide and Telephoto views without missing a beat

– it also cleverly calibrates the lenses on the fly for perfect colour and tone matching, even when shooting 4K Ultra HD video.

Also welcome is a new Night mode, which helps you capture better low-light images. Apple also unveiled Deep Fusion – available in the next few months, it uses Machine Learning to capture a series of shots before you press the shutter, then combines them with a longer exposure captured after to craft stunning images even in tricky lighting conditions.

To accommodate the new camera system, the iPhone 11 Pro comes with a revised body made from surgical stainless steel and the “toughest glass ever in a smartphone”. Available in Midnight Green, Space Grey, Silver and Gold, Apple’s new flagship iPhone is also IP68 rated for water resistance, meaning you can dunk it in up to 4m of water for up to 30 minutes, and it’s protected against drink spills too.

The 5.6in iPhone 11 Pro costs from £1,049. The bigger 6.5in iPhone 11 Pro Max costs from £1,149. Both are available now.

The affordable option

As with the iPhone XS last year, the iPhone 11 Pro is joined by a more affordable sibling, the iPhone 11.

Available in Purple, Yellow, Green, Black, White and Product (Red) anodised aluminium finishes, the iPhone 11 eschews the triple-lens setup of the Pro in favour of a dual-camera array. However, Apple has also beefed up the front-facing camera so it now shoots in 4K and given it a slow-mo mode, enabling you to shoot slow-motion selfies – or “slofies” as Apple calls them.

The iPhone 11 retains the XR’s 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, but gets a speed and battery life boost (up to an hour more) thanks to the presence of the same A13 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 11 Pro.

Like the Pro, it also includes 802.11ax (aka Wi-Fi 6) support, faster Face ID, plus Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos for more immersive sound quality. The iPhone 11 costs from £729.
