How green is Apple?

A look at Apple’s environmental commitment

629MW

> Apple currently has 28 operational renewable energy projects across nine countries on four continents, totalling 629 megawatts of generation capacity, plus 15 more projects under construction. Once they’re built, it will have over 1.5 gigawatts of renewable energy generation across 12 countries and five continents.

200

> Daisy, Apple’s custom disassembly robot, can take apart up to 200 iPhones per hour, removing and sorting components for recycling or reuse. That’s 1.2 million a year.

4.8m tonnes

> Using recycled and hydroelectric-made aluminium, improving products’ energy efficiency and other product design changes resulted in 4.8 million metric tonnes less CO2 emissions in 2018 compared to the previous fiscal year. That’s equivalent to taking more than a million cars off the road. Overall, Apple has reduced its emissions by 64% since 2011.

100%

> Since early 2018, 100% of Apple’s facilities globally – all its offices, retail stores and data centres in 43 countries – are 100% powered by clean, renewable electricity. Two-thirds of this energy comes from Apple-created projects.

100% recycled

> The casings of the latest MacBook Air and new Mac mini are made of 100% recycled aluminium, halving those products’ carbon footprints. Apple invented a new alloy to do it, because standard recycled aluminium gathers impurities each time it’s recycled.

48%

> Apple has reduced plastic in its packaging by 48% in the past three years. In addition, all of the wood fibre in its retail packaging is recycled or certified responsibly sourced.
