How to Set up a VPN
1 Choose an app
Go to the App Store and search for ‘VPN’. Read the description, reviews, and terms and conditions of apps that interest you. Check how the service treats your data, whether it’s logged and whether the service displays ads.
2 Download the app
Once you’ve chosen an app, check how its free service is structured. Most are free to download, though only offer a free trial version. Choose one that offers free service beyond just a trial period. Tap Get when you’re happy.
3 Launch the app
You’ll need to create an account, so start by filling in email and password details. You’ll need to confirm your email address, too. Once you’ve confirmed your address, you’ll be able to switch on the VPN.
4 Give the app permission to access settings
To use the app you’ll need to give it permission to access VPN Configurations. Read the warning in the dialog box and then click Allow. You’ll have to type in your passcode.
5 Change countries
A benefit of VPNs is that you can ‘pretend’ to be in a different country, to access streaming content not available in your location, or evade government filters. Tap ‘Auto’ then choose a country and wait for it to reconnect.
6 Add a trusted network
If you’re connected to your home or work Wi-Fi, you don’t need a VPN, so you can set it not to automatically connect when you’re on those networks. Tap Settings, then Trusted Networks, then the ‘+’ next to the network.
