Draw on paper using AR guidelines

YOU WILL LEARN To draw using traditional media

YOU’LL NEED iOS 12 or later, SketchAR Create Art Draw Paint (free with IAPs)

SketchAR uses the power of an iPhone or iPad to guide your pencil to create lifelike drawings. It’s not as easy as the promos show, though – until you’re used to drawing with AR, it is quite a tricky thing to master. You’ll need the right conditions; we placed our cartridge paper on an artist’s table easel and used our favourite drawing pencils.

If you’re not comfortable using your setup without AR, it’ll only make using this kind of technology tougher. Drawing with AR doesn’t work for everyone. Take advantage of SketchAR’s free trial lessons before committing to the cost of a subscription.

Align the image

Aligning the AR image is crucial: SketchAR relies on recognising the four edges of your paper. Make those crisp and clear by drawing on a single sheet on an easel or clipboard, with a marked tonal contrast between the paper and background. To start with, use smaller paper such as A5 so your device can see those margins at a distance comfortable for you to look at its display while you draw.

If SketchAR loses alignment, point the camera away, then bring it back to an image with all sides of your paper visible and square on. Sometimes you’ll need to save your project, close the app and open it again to restore alignment. Now, best of luck with it!
