HOW TO Editing real instruments and vocals in GarageBand

-

1 Create the structure

We’re using the same project as before, but we’ve used copy and paste to make it longer and give it some structure, with some instruments dropping in and out. Now for some vocals. Click the ‘+’ icon at the very top left of the window.

2 Choose your weapon

You can add three kinds of track here: a MIDI track where you play a keyboard or other MIDI controller; Audio, where you record a microphone or instrument; and Drummer, which is GarageBand’s virtual drummer.

3 Choose a sound

Click the Library icon at the very top left and navigate to Voice. Click on the different presets to hear the one you like best; you can adjust it in the control area at the bottom. Select the new track, click Record and start singing.

4 Try another take

If you’re not sure you like what you’ve recorded, no problem: you can record multiple versions and choose the one you like best. Just go back to the beginning of the song or section and record in the same place.

5 Pick a performance

If you ≈-click on a section with multiple takes, you’ll see options. Selecting the name of the take (eg, Take 2) makes that the version to play. If you’re sure that’s the one, Delete Unused Takes gets rid of the others.
