TOP TIPS FROM THE GIRL WHO CRIED WOLF
When Audrey Tait and Lauren Gilmour aren’t recording as alt-pop duo The Girl Who Cried Wolf, they’re the production wizards at Novasound studio (novasound.net).
They also share their skills online in video tutorials and free cheat sheets at novasound.net/novaskills. “Most of our regular clients have invested in home setups now,” Audrey told us. “And we’ve met a whole lot of new artists – digitally! – who’ve had time to create at home that they didn’t have before.” Here are Audrey’s top tips for making studioready home recordings.
1: Know your DAW
Get familiar with your software, watch tutorials, learn shortcuts and ask for advice. It gets you into good habits and really helps your efficiency when the ideas are truly flowing.
2: Make time
Getting the best sound and performance takes time and effort, but it’s really worth it.
3: Clean up
Decide on your takes, edit accordingly and organise things in a tidy way so that you or a mixing engineer can focus on the most important thing: your mix!
4: Label things properly
Label your tracks and include BPM. It’ll save you so much time later.
5: Have a vision
Whether it’s production or mixing, use references to describe the sound and feel you want for your song. Anything from songs to pictures, words and colours can be helpful to capture the vibe you’re aiming for.
