“Can’t innovate anymore, my ass” said Phil Schiller in 2013, right before Apple innovated its way into perhaps its most divisive product ever, the ‘trashcan’ Mac Pro.
That was its last big design salvo. Apple has since stuck with glass, metal and even (at times) been called boring, all while its main competition, the PC, has been allowed to run wild.
Asus’ ROG Zephyrus G14 puts a dot matrix LED pixel display on its laptop lid; Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus places an e-ink screen there instead; Acer’s ConceptD 7 Ezel laptop has a floating screen, which can be positioned artistic and creative purposes. The PC desktop features cases of all shapes and sizes, screens on everything from water cooling blocks to RAM. Major names have innovated with pre-built systems, like the ultracompact Corsair One, or the compartment-cooled Alienware Aurora. There’s a world of inspiration for Apple to draw from – but will it be bold enough?
