An Otter RSS Reader

The world’s okayest RSS reader

Free (IAPs) FROM Josh Holtz, anotterrss.com NEEDS iOS 14 or later

Developer Josh Holtz wanted An Otter RSS Reader to be the world’s “most okayest RSS reader.” We think he’s managed it.

If you’re already using Reeder or NetNewsWire with tons of feeds, this is not the app for you – you can import feeds in OPML format, but you can’t use this as a frontend for your sync service.

An Otter is best suited to people who are new to RSS. Its auto-discovery feature enables you to enter a website address and let it find the feeds. It works well on established sites, but we found it unpredictable with some blogs. You can choose whether to subscribe, then organise feeds into folders.

An Otter lacks a dedicated reading module though. For each article, it links directly to the website and displays it as the original web page with the option to switch into

Safari’s Reading View, so you can’t refresh a feed without an internet connection, and you don’t get a consistent reading experience. Until you tap the reading view icon, you’ll be exposed to the online irritants that make RSS so attractive, such as bad page design and intrusive ads.

An Otter is a friendly app for RSS beginners then. It’s… okay. Mission accomplished. Carrie Marshall
