(1998)

The RIO was like a prettier MPMan. It’s more famous than the MPMan because the record industry tried to sue it out of existence.

Samsung YEPP (1999)

Steve Jobs would have approved: the Yepp was made with the aim of being the smallest MP3 player on the market.

Sony Network Walkman NW-MS7

(1999)

It sounded better than the iPod, but Sony didn’t support MP3 and used its own proprietar­y and expensive Memory Stick storage.

MPMan F10 (1998)

The first portable MP3 player was this little one from Saehan Informatio­n Systems. It had 32MB of Flash memory and an LCD screen.

HanGo Personal Jukebox PJB-100

(1999) Developed by PC giant Compaq, the HanGo was the first hard disk MP3 player. You could put 1,200 songs in your pocket.

Creative Labs NOMAD Jukebox

(2000)

For many, the NOMAD range were the MP3 players to beat. Despite their odd looks they were powerful and capable music players.

Cowon iAUDIO (2000)

Cowon’s kept the digital music faith for a long time: it currently makes class-leading hi-res audio devices.
