ExpressVPN
$12.95 (about £9.99)/month FROM expressvpn.com
Previously, ExpressVPN was out in a field of its own when it came to performance. While it’s still lightning fast thanks to its new proprietary Lightway protocol, it’s been caught by NordVPN. Nevertheless, it’s still blisteringly quick, even when connected to some really far-flung servers.
ExpressVPN’s network is not the largest, but its 3,000 servers are spread across 94 countries and it’s one of a few that works in China. It’s also great for unblocking geo restrictions to enable you to stream a host of services, from Netflix to BBC iPlayer.
The interface can be a little confusing as you need to open multiple windows to access certain settings, but the menu bar icon has a handy shortcut menu. The big downer is the price – even its yearly package is expensive – and the fact it only supports five simultaneous connections. But if performance and security are your thing, ExpressVPN is worth it.
