Easy on the eyes
Baldo backs up its pleasing gameplay with a striking graphical style that combines flat-colour comic-book characters with more detailed surroundings. It looks particularly gorgeous in the game’s dungeons, where light and shadow combine so exquisitely that you’ll often just stop and stare.
Every time you enter a new room or world space, the game is saved. You’ll be glad for this thanks to the sheer number of deaths that will befall you, and not having to repeat much progress is a huge relief. We just wish Baldo would let you rotate the camera as you work your way through its world. Dungeons are so packed with props that at times your view is obscured, and it’s a little galling when that leads to your untimely demise. It won’t stop you enjoying this charming, entertaining adventure, though. It gives a novel twist to familiar fantasy tropes, taking what it learned from past greats and polishing them up for the modern era. If you like Zelda, you’ll love this beautiful, creative adventure.
