MORE EASY WAYS TO TO SPEED UP YOUR MAC

Want a turbo boost? There’s still more you can do

-

Exhausted all our fantastic ideas here but feel your Mac still isn’t running as fast as you’d like? There are still things you can do to give it a boost or make you more productive.

You should start by making sure macOS is up to date. Click on the  menu, choose ‘About this Mac’, then Software Update. Unless you have a good reason not to, you should also check the box that tells macOS to install updates automatically. Next, make sure the apps you run regularly are up to date. You can usually check for updates using the app name menu in an application or on the Mac App Store for apps you’ve downloaded from there.

Check your Wi-Fi and broadband connection. So much of what we do on our Macs relies on a stable internet connection that a drop-off in speed can have a significant impact on the way our Macs run. While you’re at it, do you really need that many browser tabs open? Each tab occupies resources, as you’ll see if you look in Activity Monitor. Try closing a few and see what effect it has on your Mac’s performance. You should also use Finder Stacks (Finder > View > Use Stacks) to cut down on the clutter on your Desktop. If there is more than one user logged in to your Mac, log out from the one you’re not using currently.

If you need a bigger boost than that, it’s time to look at upgrading your hardware. If you’re Mac is able to accept after-market RAM upgrades, it may well be worth the investment. If you still have a hard drive as your startup disk, maybe swap it for an SSD. That will make a significant improvement to the length of time it takes your Mac to start up.

Peripheral power

In terms of making you more productive, adding an external display to a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air can help a great deal. If you use your Mac to play games, hooking up a mechanical gaming keyboard and a mouse designed for the fast responses need in some games can help. And if you spend your time using apps that place a heavy burden on an Intel Mac’s GPU, investing in an external GPU could make a big difference.

If, after all our advice, you find you’re still having specific issues and can’t resolve them yourself, the support section on Apple’s website is a mine of useful information. And, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s worth booking a visit to a Genius Bar or contacting Apple Support via Apple’s website.
