AI keep accidentally muting my iPhone, causing missed calls. How can I stop this?
Unlike volume controls, you can’t disable the Mute switch. Some tape it over, but it’s better to inset it in a cover which makes it harder to toggle. Another help is to turn on vibration in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, so when your phone rings you should be more aware of it.
Many covers make the switch so hard to use that you need to set up another way of muting and unmuting your phone. Currently, Mute is only offered in the Control Centre on iPads, not iPhones. There are two good alternatives, depending on whether you want to use a Back Tap or an on-screen button as the control.
In iOS 14 and later, you can customise the Back Tap feature to toggle muting. In Settings tap Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, at the bottom of the list, then choose either a double or triple tap, and set its action to Mute.
The other way is to use AssistiveTouch. In Settings, tap Accessibility > Touch again and locate AssistiveTouch at the top. Turn that feature on and tap Customise Top Level Menu. To add a control, tap ‘+’ followed by the ‘+’ within that new icon. Tick Mute in the menu, and the control changes into a soft Mute switch. To use it, enable AssistiveTouch and its floating button gives easy access, while disabling AssistiveTouch removes its button from the screen. As with Back Tap, when you tap the Mute control the new setting is shown on screen.
