Authenticator apps: do you need one? Make password management simpler by ensuring you can securely access your vault on your mobile devices Manage passwords on iPhone, iPad, Watch

Password management on your mobile devices is virtually identical to that on your Mac – unsurprising, as many of your passwords are required to unlock online accounts across all the computers and devices you own. With that in mind, it pays to choose a password management tool that can be deployed across all your devices.

If you put your faith in your macOS’s Keychain for password storage, then the good news is that this is easily extended to your Apple mobile devices using iCloud Keychain, which is linked to your Apple ID. You’ll have been prompted to enable iCloud Keychain on your iPhone or iPad when your first set it up; if you skipped that step previously, switch it on via Settings > your account > iCloud > Keychain. Be sure to verify it’s set up on your Mac too – do so via System Prefs > Apple ID > iCloud – to ensure your passwords (including changes) are synced across all your Apple devices.

Keychain is also protected by two-factor authentication (2FA), so after entering your password on a new device for the first time, you’ll receive an alert on your other, trusted devices. You’ll need to verify the login is genuine, then enter the six-digit numerical code displayed on your new device to add it to the trusted list. This protects your account in the event of the password being compromised – if an alert pops up you weren’t expecting, it’s possible your account has been hacked, in which case change your Apple ID’s password immediately.

If you decide to put your trust in a third-party password manager, install its app on your device and follow the instructions to use Face ID or Touch ID to speed up logging
