Thoughtful design with nearly everything you could want

Some apps like HEY and Spike have tried to totally reinvent email for the modern era, but we’re not entirely

convinced yet. They’re certainly worth a try, but have too many drawbacks to come out on top here.

Apple’s Mail is the top dog for privacy, but that’s about it. Airmail, on the other hand, has a lot to like about it, with a feature-rich yet easy-to-use interface that makes everyday email work simple. But it lacks a few too many features to win this round.

That leaves Edison Mail and Spark. They trade blows almost equally, and both are truly superb email apps. Edison’s ability to put everything you need at your fingertips without creating clutter gets it plenty of points, and we’re especially grateful for its smart assistant. Yet it can’t quite surmount Spark, which crams in almost every modern feature you could ever need, and for free, no less. We must also applaud the care that has gone into its design – using it feels almost effortless. That bags it our group test crown.
