Essential protection

If you accidentally delete something, even a draft, it’s now possible to dig it back up for a limited time by heading to the website. Understandably, many of the more complex and rarely used administerial tools are tucked away online rather than being part of the app, but it means if you have the relevant login data to hand you’ll be able to access and edit all of your information whether you’ve installed the app or not.

The search function, built into the main app and also available through 1Password’s menu bar-based Quick Access tool, is instant – indeed, the whole app now feels incredibly snappy. That speed extends to the browser plug-in; it’s fast to load and, for new logins, offers quick access to secure generated passwords along with a new save window which enables you to customise the entry in 1Password’s database at the point of creation.

Realistically, there’s no question of whether or not you need a password manager. With the amount of passwords you have to create for different websites nowadays, you do. If you can make it a password manager that doesn’t feel like hard work to maintain, access or even unlock – and one which can even boast an impeccable security record to boot – things get pretty unquestionable. This refreshed 1Password is just that. Alex Cox
