HOW TO Use Personal Hotspot

1 Enable Personal Hotspot

Tap Settings on your Mac, then tap Personal Hotspot. Toggle ‘Allow Others to Join’ to the On position. To choose a Wi-Fi password other than the default one shown, tap the password then type in a new one. Tap Done.

2 Manage Family Sharing

Personal Hotspot allows you to specify whether iCloud Family Sharing users need approval to connect to your iPhone. To preapprove someone, tap Family Sharing, then their name and tap Automatic, then Back.

3 Connect Mac using Wi-Fi

Click the Wi-Fi icon in the Finder menu bar, then choose your iPhone. If asked for the password, type it in. You’ll see the network change to your iPhone and a Personal Hotspot symbol on your iPhone’s Home Screen.

5 Connect using Bluetooth

On iPhone, tap Settings > Bluetooth. Stay on that screen. On Mac, go to > System Preference­s > Bluetooth and wait for your iPhone to appear. Click Connect. Follow the instructio­ns to pair your Mac and iPhone.

7 Set up USB hotspot

Once your iPhone has connected, navigate to > System Preference­s > Network on your Mac. You should see your iPhone in the lefthand pane with a green circle and the word Connected underneath.

4 Connect iPad using Wi-Fi

Tap Settings, then Wi-Fi. Tap your iPhone in the list of networks. If asked, type in the password for your iPhone’s hotspot. When connected, you’ll see a blue tick next to your iPhone and the Hotspot symbol on your phone.

6 Connect Mac using USB

Using a Lightning to USB cable, connect your iPhone to the Mac. If you have a Mac with only USB-C ports, you’ll need a Lightning to USB-C cable or an adaptor. When the iPhone is connected, it will appear in the Finder sidebar.

8 Disconnect

To disconnect from the Personal Hotspot, you can either toggle ‘Allow Others to Join’ to Off, turn off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on your Mac or iPad, or eject and disconnect your USBconnect­ed iPhone from your Mac.
