How to run First Aid on an external disk?

> In Disk Utility, if you select the volume first then click First Aid, you’re likely to see an error that the drive couldn’t be unmounted, so couldn’t be checked. If that happens, manually unmount the volume or drive as needed, run First Aid, then remount it. If that also fails, use Disk Utility in Recovery instead.
