NEXT-GEN M2 CHIP ARRIVES

APPLE SILICON CONTINUES ITS FAST-PACED EVOLUTION

> Powering the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro is the M2 chip, which brings a number of improvements over the M1 from two years ago. For starters, Apple says the M2 comprises 20 billion transistors and a 100GB/sec memory controller. You can also configure it with up to 24GB of unified memory. According to Apple, the M2’s eight-core CPU (four performance cores and four efficiency cores) is up to 18% faster than the M1. Apple also claimed it is 1.9 times quicker than a 10-core PC chip, and can deliver 87% of the performance of a 12-core PC chip at a quarter of the power.

The 10-core GPU, meanwhile, is 25% better than the M1 at the same power level, or 35% faster at maximum power. It also outperforms a 10-core PC chip by 2.3 times, claims Apple. Finally, the M2 has a new Media Engine, a next-generation Secure Enclave and a new 16-core Neural Engine.
