HOW TO Create a newsletter in Pages

-

1 Choose a template

In Pages, click the Pages menu and choose New. In the left-hand sidebar, choose Newsletters. You will see five newsletters in different styles. Choose the one you want. We’re going to use the School Newsletter for this tutorial.

2 Change header colour

Click the edge of the red box (on the template) where the header is, making sure not to choose a text box. Click Style in the right-hand sidebar then, under Fill, choose a Fill option then choose a colour. Repeat the process for the border.

3 Edit the text

Click one of the text boxes and then select all the text. Type the text you want to go in the box. Use the Font section of the Text palette to make text look the way you want it to. Choose a colour from the Text Colour menu.

4 Save new style

You can adjust vertical and horizontal alignment using the options below Text Colour. Once you’re happy with the look, you can save it as a new style. At the top of the Text panel, next to the style name, click Update.

5 Change box colours

Click each box in the template, one at a time, and change the colour or style in the same way we did with the header. When you’re happy, click the right arrow in the Shape Styles section and click ‘+’ to save the style.

6 Save the template

Once the template looks the way you want it to, click the File menu, then ‘Save as Template’. Next, click ‘Add to Template Chooser’. Now, you will be able to choose this template whenever you want to update the newsletter.

7 Add image from Photos

Click the photo icon at the bottom right of an image on the template to open the Photos browser. Locate the photo you want to place on the page and click it. Use the Styles palette to choose an image style or create a new one.

8 Add image from Mac

Select the image in the template you want to replace, then click the Media button in the toolbar. Select Choose, and navigate to the image you want to add. Or, select the image box in Pages and drag an image on to it from Finder.

9 Edit image mask

To choose which part of an image to display. Click the image, then choose Image in the sidebar. Click Edit Mask. Use the slider to enlarge or reduce the size of the image inside the mask, and click and drag it to move it around.

10 Add new page

In the toolbar, click Add Page. The new page is blank, except for the page number. Start by copying page furniture such as the header from the previous page. Select and copy it, then paste it on the new page.

11 Add text box

Click the Text tool in the toolbar and then drag the corners of the text box, paying attention to the guides, so it fills the page. With the text box selected, go to Text > Layout and set the Columns to ‘2’. Paste your text.

12 Add an object

We’ll add a box to hold a quote. Click Shape in the toolbar and choose a shape. Use the Style palette to set its colour. Click Arrange, then choose Automatic from the Text Wrap menu so text runs around the outside of the shape.
