Apple plans a ‘flood’ of devices

Get ready for an influx of iPhones, Macs, and more

- Expect iPhones, Macs, iPads and a near-mythical top-secret project…

Apple is set to unleash a deluge of new products in late 2022 and early 2023, according to a prominent Apple journalist. That could include iPhones, Macs, iPads, a near-mythical top-secret project, and even some old devices resurrected and given a new lease of life.

The news comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who has a strong track record with previous Apple leaks and rumours. Let’s see what he had to say.

iPhone mini waves goodbye

Starting with the iPhone, Gurman explains that Apple will release four models this autumn: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone mini is noticeably absent, being replaced by a larger 6.7-inch version of the iPhone 14.

Gurman says one of the main features of the iPhone 14 Pro models will be an always-on display. This will show widgets and other data at a low brightness, with an option to prevent sensitive info from appearing.

The Pro models will also get better cameras (including a 48-megapixel rear sensor), a faster A16 chip, thinner bezels, and a new notch with a hole punch and pill layout. The non-Pro models, meanwhile, will stick with the A15 chip.

As for iPads, Gurman believes a new low-end iPad with A14 chip, 5G, and a USB-C connector will be launched in the autumn. And he’s also predicting we can expect new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models kitted out with the M2 chip at the same time, as well as a larger iPad (between 14 and 15 inches) “sometime in the next year or two”.

New Macs galore

Macs aren’t going to be left out of the party – in fact, Gurman believes they will be an integral part of the upcoming product cascade. All told, there will be a host of new M2-based Macs (besides the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13in announced at WWDC and on sale now).

That includes a new Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro chips, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, and a Mac Pro with M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips. That last chip has not been announced by Apple, but is rumoured to be the next thing to top the company’s chip line-up.

Beyond the M2 range, Apple could soon release its successor, the M3. Gurman expects this to appear in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13-inch first as well as in a new iMac, and an as-yet-unnamed 12-inch laptop that could be a revived version of the MacBook 12-inch discontinued in 2019.

As expected, new Apple Watch models are coming. That could include the arrival of a new rugged edition, which Gurman says will launch alongside a regular Apple Watch and a new Apple Watch SE.

AirPods Pro could get improved audio and a new chip, although there’s no mention of the hearing aid functionality from our story (see ‘Many upgrades…’ to the right on this page). And there might be a new Apple TV with an A14 chip and an extra gigabyte of memory.

An unexpected return

Now we get to the really juicy bits. Gurman believes Apple’s ultra-secretive mixedreality headset is coming with an M2 chip and 16GB of memory. As we cover in a story over the page, this device is expected to be revealed as soon as January 2023.

Finally, in a surprise move, Apple might relaunch the original HomePod with an S8 chip, tuned-up audio, and a better display that could offer multi-touch functionality.

With all these products apparently waiting in the wings, the next 12 months could be massive for Apple fans. Keep your eyes peeled to see what Apple unveils at its forthcoming events.
