HOW TO Move your Photos library

-

1 Find your photos

Quit Photos if it’s open, open Finder and navigate to your Pictures folder. Unless you’ve changed it, your library should be in the users/[your name]/ Pictures folder. Look for the file with the Photos icon named Photo Library.

2 Drag and drop

Use ⌘+I to find out how big your library is; at over 200GB, we need a fairly big external drive to copy it to. Connect your external storage and it’ll appear in the Finder sidebar. Drag your Photos Library on to it and put the kettle on.

3 Relocate your photos

Launch Photos while holding the ⌥ key; you’ll see the Choose Library window. Navigate to your library’s new location and set that as Photos’ go-to library. Don’t delete the original until you’ve done this and checked it’s okay.
