Titling your photos

-

QMany of my photos on my Mac used to have titles, but now they are in iCloud, I can’t see the titles on my iPad. How can I title them properly? byMALCOLM CORCORAN

AThe title of a photo is a part of its metadata – information about that image rather than the image itself. There are several places where metadata can be stored, and this has changed over the years. When you originally titled your photos, those were probably put in metadata that are no longer used for that purpose.

While you can still add titles to images in Photos on a Mac, those can’t be seen or edited on iOS or iPadOS, which prefer to use captions instead. They can be longer and more descriptive, and are supported on macOS as well, but can only be viewed and edited by opening each photo and tapping on the Info button. There’s no way to display titles or captions under your photos, except on macOS.

Photos on iOS and iPadOS 15 and later provides limited access to certain types of metadata, such as date, time and location. Third-party apps give greater access to metadata, including those of the EXIF standard, most commonly used across most image types. An EXIF editor such as 7color’s Exif Viewer lets you store great detail about your photos, but much of it can only be viewed by apps other than Photos, which has now standardised on access to captions.
