Dictation and Siri

Dictation has been significantly improved. Tap the microphone to start speaking and iOS will punctuate your speech automatically, recognising where it should put any commas and full stops. You can also add emoji by speaking the name of the emoji followed by “emoji”. When you stop speaking, you can type at the cursor, or move the cursor and edit text. When you start speaking again, the dictation will restart at the cursor. You’ll notice a microphone icon with an ‘X’ next to it hovering over the cursor. Tap that and the dictation will end.

Siri Shortcuts in third-party apps are now available as soon as you install the app. Previously, developers could include intents with their apps, but you’d have to create Shortcut actions yourself. Now, complete actions can be built into apps.

You can now use Siri to hang up a FaceTime or phone call. Finally, ask Siri what it can do in iOS 16 by saying “Hey Siri, what can I do here?”.

Dictation is much improved, allowing you to swap quickly between dictating and typing.
