Find dupes and apply batch edits to your photos

-

Although there’s no major change in Photos, lots of smaller improvements like finding duplicates and batch editing make it even better to use.

Eliminate duplicates

When Photos analyses images in your library, it looks for duplicates with contents that appear identical even if files have different formats or metadata. Any it finds are listed in a new section in its sidebar, so you can check them and accept its offer to merge them into one.

Display in HDR

If your Mac’s display supports high dynamic range with HDR, enable Photos’ Settings > General > View Full HDR so that your display will be automatically adjusted to show images in HDR.

Batch edit images

When you have a batch of images to which you want to apply exactly the same edits, make those on one of the images, copy and paste those edits to apply them to the others.

Import photos and videos

The standard Photos picker used to import photos and videos into system and other apps has been improved, and now provides improved search of your Photos library.

More Memories

Memory types available now include This Day in History, and children playing.

Locked albums

By default, any hidden albums, and those recently deleted, now require your password or Touch ID to unlock and open them. You can change that if you wish in Photos’ Settings > General > Privacy.

iCloud Photos in full res

When you store photos and videos in iCloud Photos, Photos normally reduces storage needs by downloading lower resolution versions. If your Mac has sufficient local space, it’s an idea to keep those images at their original resolution by changing Photos’ Settings > iCloud to keep quick access to their original full-res versions.

Identify photo contents

Access Visual Look Up by opening an image, and when the Info tool at the top right has a ‘+’ sign at its upper left, click on that to show clickable white dots on each recognised object.

Disable Memories

If Memories and Featured Photos actually just annoy you, you can at last disable these in both Photos and the Photos widget, in Settings > General > Show Featured Content.

Sort People by name

Find someone easier in the People album by sorting names alphabetically.

Restart your Memories videos

To restart a video playing in Memories, simply tap it and any music will continue uninterrupted. Title or caption?

Give photos and videos a meaningful caption, rather than a title, as captions are more compatible across Photos on different devices. Correct info

Each photo and video you have stored contains rich metadata about the camera and settings used, location, date taken, and more. You can display this information by clicking the Info button at the upper right of each image in your

Photos library. Some of that information can also be corrected or changed. Shared in Messages

Adding photos and videos received in Messages to your Photos library is a single-click operation, using the Share button to the right of the image. In Photos, they then appear in its new Shared with You section. Sharing back is as simple: select the images in Photos and use the Share button in the toolbar to send them to Messages as a collection. Add Music to Memories

If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can add any of the songs from its vast library to play with Memories.

?? ?? Visual Look Up now extends to common birds, butterflies like this comma, other insects and some statues.
Rather than adding titles, add information in captions, as they’re more widely supported.
When you’ve edited an image, copy those edits to paste them and apply the same changes to a batch of photos.
When Photos discovers identical images, it puts them in a Duplicates section, then offers to merge them into one.
