Cascable 3.2

Remote control your camera

-

Free From Cascable AB, cascable.se Made for iPhone, iPad Needs iOS 10.0 or later

Being able to control a DSLR camera without touching it can be fantastic for creative photography, but normally means adding extra gizmos to it — more things to lose, more batteries to juggle. But why not use your iPhone?

Cascable is an iOS app that works with Wi-Fi-equipped cameras and gives you full control over focus, exposure, and so on. You get a live preview on your iPhone screen. Adjust aperture, ISO, white balance, and shutter speed, tap to set the focus point, and your camera obeys.

You need to connect to your camera’s own Wi-Fi (check the Cascable site for the list of compatible cameras), which may mean disabling auto-join to your home network when you’re trying it out. We had recurring Wi-Fi hiccups, which meant resetting the connection, but the online help was good.

Impressively, Cascable is free. The more high-end tricks — like previewing and copying Raw images, focus peaking, or running complex “Shutter Robot Recipes” — require a Pro purchase of $29.99 or a subscription, but if you need these tricks, you’ll find it worth the cost. For most of us, the free features will do.

For anyone who likes having control over their photographs, here’s our advice: If you have a camera with Wi-Fi, get Cascable. If your camera doesn’t have Wi-Fi, get one that does and then get Cascable. It’s that good.

The bottom line. Cascable is a brilliant app that not only controls compatible cameras remotely, it expands on their features. Keith Martin
