Free/Pro from $0.99 monthly From Faber Acoustical, faberacoustical.com Made For iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch Needs iOS 10.0 or later With SoundMeter X, you can turn your cell into a portable sound level meter.

The free version supports time exponential weighted sound levels, Lp, with flat frequency weighting and fast time weighting (LpAF). That’s plenty for most users, but a subscription adds a raft of additional features including data logging, Leq and Lx sound levels, and support for up to eight channels.

On Apple Watch, SoundMeter X acts as a remote control for sound levels, so you can tap play to see your chosen meter update in real time. There’s only one view available with the free version, but you can view or control octave, recorder, signal generator, and dose options with a Pro subscription.

Sadly, the watchOS app doesn’t actually use the Watch’s mic — sound level measurements can only be taken from the iPhone mic or compatible external audio device. the bottom line. A useful tool for engineers/musicians, but the free version is limited.
