Tayasui Sketches is an app for drawing or painting on iOS. On the iPad, it has a clean, minimal user interface. On the iPhone, it’s pared down even further. It reminded us of Paper by Fiftythree, but in fact Sketches is a lot more flexible.

Used with a finger or eraser stylus, Sketches adds variation and smoothing to create stylish strokes. For finer control, a $5.99 Pro IAP supports Apple Pencil and a range of third-party styluses, such as Adonit’s Pixel. The upgrade also adds layers, pattern fills, and a color mixer.

Brushes aren’t fully editable as in Procreate, but you can alter size and opacity. The default settings are beautifully judged, from the satisfyingly scratchy pen to watercolors that mix together until you “dry” them.

There’s room for improvement: layer blending modes are few, you don’t get tone or color adjustments, and the canvas is fixed at screen resolution — but Retina devices provide enough pixels for most purposes.

the bottom line. Brush editing is limited, but overall Sketches excels.
