Small changes, big improvement
My kids love watching YouTube videos, but the Apple TV experience always felt like a second-class one. As if generally laggy performance wasn’t enough, subscriptions were displayed in a long, seemingly endless horizontal list. To top it off, there wasn’t even a progress bar to indicate which videos were already viewed or in progress. We wound up using Roku instead.
Mercifully, all of these issues have been resolved as of version 2.01.04 for fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV models. Content in the Subscriptions tab now appears in a grid layout like it used to, controls are more responsive, video scrubbing once again works great with the Siri Remote touchpad, the search keyboard works better with third-party remotes, and you can now see which videos have been watched. Goodbye Roku!
The user interface of YouTube’s Apple TV app is now massively improved.
