USB flash stor­age is usu­ally for­mat­ted as ExFAT, mak­ing it us­able on most com­put­ers. There is no rea­son you shouldn’t re­for­mat as Mac OS Ex­tended if you’re only go­ing to use it with Macs; High Sierra can for­mat some drives as APFS, but this won’t be back­ward­ly­compat­i­ble with older ver­sions of macOS.
