Yoink

Enjoy unrestricted drag and drops on iOS

$5.99 From Eternal Systems Software, eternalstorms.at Made for iPhone, iPad Needs iOS 11 or later Yoink is a productivity tool for iOS that allows you to drag elements onto a ‘shelf’ in one app and then drag them off that shelf in another. Those elements can be documents, pictures, text snippets, web links, or anything else that iOS allows you to share or copy to the Clipboard. It’s a neat way of getting around the one–item–at–a–time restriction of the Clipboard.

Yoink 2 adds the ability to sync shelves with different iOS devices using iCloud — syncing with the Mac version is coming soon. Version 2.0 also brings support for Handoff between iOS devices and from iOS device to Mac, provided you’re using version 3.5 on your Mac. And it supports Siri Shortcuts in iOS 12.

In use, Yoink differs depending on whether you use it on an iPhone or an iPad. In the iPad version, you can use Slide–Over or Split– Screen modes to drag elements from an app to a Yoink shelf. On the iPhone, there are a number of other options to get around the fact that it doesn’t have these Split–Screen or Slide– Over modes. You can use Share Sheets, the in–app Yoink keyboard, or the File Provider extension for apps that come with Document browser support.

To retrieve items on the iPhone, you can use Yoink’s Today extension (which stores recently added items) and copy an element to the clipboard; use Spotlight to search for items and then copy them; or use the Yoink keyboard. If all else fails, you can open the Yoink app and copy them or share them from there.

iOS is now very good when it comes to moving items directly from one app to another. However, Yoink comes into its own when you want to add multiple items from one place to a different app. Or when you want to share multiple items from one app between different apps. It’s clearly more useful on the iPad, but then you’re more likely to be using an iPad for work than an iPhone.

Once set up — by adding its share sheet and keyboard — it’s simple to use, staying out of the way and letting you work. And the rich snippets that display previews of images and map locations, for example, make finding the item you need very easy indeed.

the bottom line. Yoink is perfect for dragging and dropping between apps, and it’s now even more useful with iCloud sync across all your devices.
