If you’re serious about listening to podcasts, you need a serious podcast player. Overcast is just that. Version 5 introduces standalone Apple Watch playback, Siri Shortcuts, and Search — making an already excellent podcast app even more useful.

Overcast concentrates on features that actually improve your experience. Smart Speed increases playback speed without turning everybody into chipmunks by intelligently identifying and removing silences. Voice Boost saves you from pumping up the volume by applying filtering to make speech sound much clearer. And intelligent syncing means Overcast’s servers do the heavy lifting of finding new episodes, reducing the load on your device’s battery and data usage.

The app has clearly been written from the perspective of a serious podcast fan: you can try podcasts without having to subscribe, the ads aren’t horrific, the playlist management is great and you can get podcast recommendations via Twitter to help you find new things.

We did encounter niggles with the search function, though. When we searched for well–known podcasts about bands such as Hüsker Dü and R.E.M., they didn’t appear in the search results. We found ourselves having to find the exact name of each podcast in Safari in order to find them in Overcast. However, that’s a very minor niggle in an otherwise incredibly impressive podcast app.

the bottom line. Nicely designed and a joy to use, Overcast is a great podcast player.

Overcast manages to deliver lots of information without getting too cluttered.
