Open System Prefs’ Energy Saver pane and ensure ‘Put hard disks to sleep when possible’ isn’t check marked. Some drive manufacturers’ own software may set this separately, although you may want to remove those utilities for compatibility (see opposite page). Some drives sleep no matter what settings you use.
