Scanning a color swatch target

-

We scanned a Digital ColorChecker SG color target using the GretagMacbeth Color Measurement tool and checked the accuracy of the different swatches in the resulting image files. Each image was opened in Adobe Photoshop and the different swatches sampled and their color values compared. We weren’t expecting pre– press quality levels here, but we did want to at least see some reasonably accurate color capturing from each of the devices we put on test. Three out of the four didn’t let us down.

The Epson, Canon, and Kyocera devices did pretty well, sampling colors with minimal shifts in the RGB values. The Brother scan was a little too contrasty, pushing very dark gray into pure black. It also had the largest color balance shifts of the group, although the shifts were still within a small range. All the printers did fairly well in this regard, but the Epson just edged in front of the Canon and Kyocera for tonal accuracy.
