How can I grant microphone access?
I have a game that includes a voice chat feature. Since upgrading to Mojave, that feature doesn’t work. I had expected it to show a dialog asking to use the mic, but that never appeared. How do I add the game to the list in System Prefs?
Mojave’s new privacy protection puts strict limits on what apps and users can do. It stops apps accessing mics or cameras without first obtaining your consent using a standard dialog; if you agree to that, macOS adds the app to the respective list in the Privacy tab of System Preferences’ Security & Privacy pane.
Although you’d normally add apps yourself to the Full Disk Access or Accessibility lists in that pane, you can’t do so under Microphone. An app has to request that itself in order for you to be invited to give consent. The rules for how apps must do this are quite complex, and depend on what specific version of Apple’s development system was used to build them.
First, check for an update to the app, or whether support information on the game’s website has been published explaining how to address this in Mojave. If you’re using the latest release and there’s no advice, contact the game’s developer and point out the problem. Until they address it in their app, it won’t be able to access the microphone. Only the developer can fix this.
You can’t make changes to the app itself to influence its behavior for accessing hardware. Doing so would change its contents, breaking its code signature. Gatekeeper then wouldn’t allow you to run that app.
