Group test: $100 MacBook backpacks

Keep your MacBook safe and protected whenever on the move

MacBooks cost a pretty penny, so you’ll want to make sure yours is protected wherever you go. It doesn’t make sense to fork out for a premium Apple product, then lug it around in a cheap bag that doesn’t protect it from bumps and bruises.

That’s why we’ve rounded up six top MacBook backpacks. We’ve gone for a variety of options, from traditional designs to roll–tops and flexible shoulder–bags. Regardless of form factor, all are sturdy and look great.

We set out to evaluate the bags on a range of criteria. They need to be capacious, able to fit in all the things you need on a day–to–day basis, as well as offering enough space for at least a 15–inch MacBook Pro. We looked at how comfortable each of the bags is to carry, not just for a brief wear but for extended periods of time and after a couple of weeks.

Next, we cast our eye over each bag’s durability. They all claim water resistance, but what else do they offer?

Are they thick and padded enough to safely cushion your device? Do they keep your MacBook in a pouch off the ground in case you drop the bag?

Finally, we wanted to know what extra features the backpacks had to offer. Several give your bag a unique tracking code that can help you locate it, while others feature cable–routing holes and anti–tangle earbud holders. If you’re paying close to $100, these kind of extras may sway your selection.

As you can see, there’s more to a MacBook bag than meets the eye — it’s not just about the size. Let’s see which came out on top.
